The Hottest Car in America: Buy It And Watch Your Car Insurance Rates Burn You

Posted in Car Insurance | September 18th, 2009 | mcj2001 |

The record of the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reported that ranked as the number one stolen car in America for 2008 is the 1994 Accord. It dethroned the 1995 Honda Civic which was considered in 2007 as the most desirable by auto thieves.Big Bad Burglar

Honda Accord is one of the most respected cars by Americans because it is a fulfillment of what they want to find in daily transportation.  It is comfortable, spacious, intelligently engineered, easy to drive, reliable and has many safety measures.  More than these features is its high resale value.

The Accord is complete; it possesses all the facilities a family looks in a family-oriented vehicle. This motorized icon has been the auto magazine editors’ top recommendation many years running.

The NIBC rationalized why car thieves specialized in older and certain models of cars and trucks. These vehicles have parts which are valuable; parts are stripped from the vehicle and transported to a chop shop and are sold at twice the value of a used car.

Vehicles of newer models are more difficult to steal because of anti-theft devices installed, like ignition keys with embedded chips, security immobilizers, and others.

Auto theft is covered under the comprehensive section of the auto insurance policy. The coverage includes the loss of the vehicles as well as its parts like the air bag. Although it is not mandatory,  comprehensive coverage pays for damages done by fire, vandalism and even weather- related damage as flooding and earthquake.

Premiums are also affected by the loss experience of a certain car, meaning the likelihood that the insured car will be stolen or damages and the value of the car at the time of loss. Overall, industry wide, the increase in insurance premium rates are reflective of the high value of new cars on the road, the value of cars being stolen and cost of bodywork.

There will also be higher premiums for cars that are in the top ten of cars most likely to be stolen. Honda Accord has been consistently in this list. So if your car is a Honda Accord, your insurance rates will be higher.

The good news, especially for car owners, loan and insurance companies, is that the FBI Uniform Crime Report shows that the number of 2008 vehicle theft has decreased by 13.1% from that of 2007. It is projected that there will be a continuous yearly decline of vehicle thefts which in the long run will affect insurance premiums.

1 Great Way to Get Value From Auto Insurance

Posted in Car Insurance | September 14th, 2009 | mcj2001 |
Crushed car

Deductibles Revisited

Most people try to save money on auto insurance.  I you thought about  getting more value for the dollars you are paying?  How about actually spending more to get a better value?  Your auto insurance comprehensive coverage deductible is a sweet place to get more value.  If you don’t know, Comprehensive Coverage covers damage to your car that results from causes other than a collision.   If you have comprehensive coverage, you probably have a deductible of $250 or $500; this just seems to be the deductible that a lot of agents recommend.  I bet you didn’t know that lowering this deductible to $0 won’t increase your premium more than 1 or 2% in most cases.  For me it raised my 6 month premium by $11 bucks!  Last year someone  broke into my car to steal what they thought was a purse but it was my trash can!  The window cost $215 to replace and at the time my deductible was $250.

Just think, someone breaks into your car and rips it up, busts your window and you find out that you have to pay $500 out of the $800 to repair it; wouldn’t you be upset?  I was when it happened to me.  But just think if you would have paid a few more bucks to have $0 deductible, you could sit back and relax while the repairs are made; no money out of your pocket.   Also, in most cases Comprehensive claims DO NOT raise your rates like at-fault collision claims do.

Of course the rate you pay for $0 deductible will vary depending on the type of car, the driver assigned to the car and who your auto insurance company is.  Call your agent today and see what the change in premium would be on your car(s) to change your comprehensive deductible.  If it is less than 4% you would be crazy not to do it.

How Renters Can Protect Themselves and Their Worldly Possessions

Posted in Renters Insurance | September 11th, 2009 | mcj2001 |

Apartments, condominiums and houses being rented may all have insurance that covers the building but if you are a renter your personal belongings are not included by this insurance.  What would happen to your personal property in the following circumstances?

  • Fire
  • Theft or Burglary
  • Someone is  injured while inside the rented property
  • Water damage

Let’s say you take a plane ride and while trying to get your luggage out of the overhead bin, your suit case slides out and bam,  it hits a dude in the head.  If you he sues you what will you do?

A Renters Insurance policy will protect your personal property from loss or damage and give you personal liability protection anywhere in the world.  These policies are there to safeguard against unexpected situations and gives you assurance of compensation and above all, peace of mind.

Many renters take for granted the personal property that they have only to realize that this property has value and should be shielded through a Renters Insurance policy.  Clothing, furniture, appliances, computers, jewelry and sports equipment can be covered with a Renters Insurance policy.  A renter’s policy will have a “named peril” clause that will state exactly what risks are being insured against.  The named perils that can be included are :

  • Fire or lighting
  • Windstorm
  • Smoke
  • Vandalism or Malicious Mischief
  • Theft or Burglary (renters are more likely to be burglarized than home owners)
  • Water Damage
  • Liability protection which covers injury to another person while inside the rented property. This coverage may include legal presentation expenses.
  • Medical coverage for injury to another person who is not a resident of the rented property.

There are many reputable insurance companies that offer Renters Insurance that can be paid annually or monthly.    Although this type of insurance is not required by law, this is an essential policy to have.  Although a renter may feel that personal property is not worth insuring, the value of personal liability coverage is another feature of the policy to consider.  Medical expenses or lawyer’s fees are big financial burdens and having liability protection will be beneficial to you in the long run if you are found responsible for hurting someone.  These additional expenses cause stress and huge problems to the renter if ever something unexpected happens within or away from the property.

Natural calamities and their affect on property should also be taken into account.  One of the biggest risks that you take when you don’t have protection is that of being displace due to a fire.  Apartment fires happen more often than you would think.  Do you want to be in a hotel chilling out after you escape a blazing inferno or in a highschool gym with 50 other folks who didn’t think having a renters policy was worth it?

Without a Renters Insurance policy, destruction to property can be a big loss to you.   Water damage, lightning, windstorms and other acts of nature may not occur often but when they do, it can be devastating.  A Renters Insurance policy will help cushion losses and give security on the other hand.

Reality Check: Cancer Not Covered by Most Health Insurance Plans, Cancer Insurance to the Rescue

Posted in Critcal Illness Insurance | September 8th, 2009 | mcj2001 |
Cancer Survivors

Cancer Survivors

There are 1.2 million Americans diagnosed with cancer every year.  Most health insurance policies do not cover this “specified disease” or “dreaded disease”.   The cost of cancer diagnostics, operation or removal and cancer treatment are overwhelming to the victim and to their families as well.  I should know, several of my family members have died from cancer over the last 13 years.  Getting cancer insurance can help ease these financial burdens and give peace of mind to you and your family.

What many people don’t realize is most regular health insurance policies do not cover cancer treatment.  Although some policies include a few cancer diagnostic tests or minimal treatment, they do not cover the whole gamut of cancer treatment.  Some treatments are very expensive.  Expenses for cost of travel to a cancer treatment facility are not also covered by health insurance policies.

My friend’s wife had cancer and thank God she survived.  During the treatment, they had to coordinate transportation from friends to a get her to her daily treatments.  This caused a lot of stress on my friend.  After that experience about 3 years ago, I bought a cancer insurance policy that covers my family.  I pay about $88 bucks a month.  It would have been cheaper $47  but I got the kind that returns all of my premiums to me after 25 years minus any money that has been paid out on claims.  So, if I don’t have a claim, I get all of my premiums back.  I am still amazed at how robust the plan is.  It has a rider that pays $350 per pay to me if any of us need radiation or chemo therapy.  This would cover me for missed work or transportation costs or to hire friends to help in any way I need.  You shouldn’t have to hire friends but you can’t depsoit friendship in the bank either.  My plan is virtually free since it pays for my wife and I to have our annual cancer screenings. It pays the greater of $50 or the actual cost.  Even though I am a member of an HMO, I simply get the itemized statement and send it in with the claim form.  Since it is the insurance is supplemental I get the payment even though I didn’t pay for the screening tests.

Cancer insurance is a supplement to health insurance assuring that treatment and incidental expenses are covered should such illness arise.  The coverage for this type of insurance may comprise of:

  • Treatments while being an in-patient as well as being an out-patient. This includes radiation, chemotherapy, medications, etc.
  • Transportation and living expense if cancer treatment is made out of town. Payment of traveling expenses for specialists may also be part of the coverage.
  • Ambulance or air ambulance service when needed by the victim.
  • Full-time nursing care and facility when treatment is made away from the victim’s residence.
  • Reconstruction and prosthesis may be part of the insurance plan.
  • Special diagnostic tests needed to determine type of cancer may be covered by the plan.

Cancer Center Not Usually Covered by Health InsuranceAs outlined above, cancer insurance deals with services and treatment that are specific to cancer.   The price of such insurance may surprise you; it is very reasonable. The price depends on what is included in the plan.  Choosing a cancer insurance plan should be made carefully and should not be redundant with what is contained in your regular health insurance.

Cancer insurance may be an additional expense along with health insurance but this assures that in any eventuality you can have the peace of mind from knowing you are covered.  If you have a family history of cancer then this is coverage that should be purchased without hesitation. Otherwise, a regular health insurance plan would be not be enough to cover medical expenses.

Teens and Adults, In the Car, Doing What?!

Posted in Car Insurance | September 4th, 2009 | mcj2001 |

I have seen people do some of the craziest things while driving; shaving, eating a bowl of cereal, putting on makeup, and even reading books.  But I am now here to say,  “When you are driving do not text and when you are texting do not drive”. This maybe the last or the best advice you have heard in your life.

The pandemic risks of teens and adults texting while driving have almost rivaled dangers posed by drinking and driving.  This is an important issue which needs the “think tank” of first world countries. Nearly 50% of teenagers and even more than 50% of adults admitted that they do text messaging while driving on the road.  Hey I have done it too. (I used to.)

Teen-aged drivers are between the ages of 16 to 24 and it is alarming to note that teen fatalities caused by text messaging are growing 4% yearly. In a study made among high school students nationwide, 60% admitted risky driving and text messaging behind the wheels. Despite their full awareness of the danger, they did nothing to curtail it.  You know kids think they are never going to die and certainly not in their lifetime.

In 2002, Harvard Center for Risks Analysis accounted that more than 2,000 people die each year from car crashes while the driver is text messaging while around 330,000 people are injured in car crashes annually.  Studies also revealed that talking or dialing the mobile while manipulating a car takes eyes off or attention off the road more than 400% of the time. They know that motorist using a cell phone is 4 times more likely to crash.  It is a fact that 44% of American vehicles have mobile or installed phones.

Although teen-agers and adults admit the risk, this does not hinder them from receiving and texting messages while driving. Meanwhile statistics on car accidents, death and injuries due to texting are growing.

Since the biggest influence on the behavior of the young is the parents, if you have kids, you have the obligation to instruct your children on road safety.  Some of the young drivers admitted that their parents gave them driving restriction and even threaten them with penalties. But seldom are penalties imposed for this infringement of behavior.  As a result, more than half tend to disregard this imposition and only a small third followed their parents’ instructions.  Many claimed that their own parents also do message texting while on the wheel. Parents must act as models to their children’s behavior.

US legislation, aware of the growing dangers, unveiled the ALERT Act; this bill penalizes drivers who are sending email or text while driving in any part of the country. If the bill is enacted into a law, States that do not follow the text-banning law will be deducted 25% of their federal highway fund.

Insurance companies are supporting this ban on texting. The increasing occurrence of road accidents is adding burden to auto insurance companies. Insurance companies make strict investigation and check-up on the cell phone of drivers if it is a contributory factor to the accident. The cost of car insurance will probably rise if the trend of text-related crashes rises.

While passing Legislation marks a good beginning, a strong public demand is more on the development of a technology that will insure road safety in spite of text messaging.
